Please remember that the circle drive in front of the elementary school is for school buses only. We ask that parents park in the front lot by the high school and walk down to the elementary to pick up their children. This policy is for the safety of everyone. Thank you.
Elementary Earth Day Clean Up
Monday, April 22 was Earth Day. The whole Peck Elementary School went outside on this beautiful spring day to help beautify our school grounds by doing a spring clean-up. The students did a fabulous job and it looks much better around our school. We will continue the process as the weather gets nicer and we can do some planting and painting.
Jr./Sr. High School Adult Spelling Bee
Congratulations to our adult spelling bee team consisting of Tina York, Deena Prill, Katie Gordon and Katie Weller who took first place at the adult spelling bee held Tuesday, April 23rd at the Sanilac Career Center. They will now advance to the Tri-County Championship on Tuesday, April 30 at Northwood Meadows in Cass City. SpellMasters 2.0 is a spelling bee for adults that helps raise money for Human Development Commission’s Foster Grandparents and Retired and Senior Volunteer (RSVP) Programs. At this spelling bee however, individuals ages 16 and over play against a team – not one by one. We are proud of you and best of luck in the next round!!
Kathleen Weller and Angelina Wilson, the two students in Spanish 4, journeyed to Chicago with Mrs. Holladay-Kinel on April 19th in order to help make the world a better place for homeless Hispanic youth. Previous to the trip, the girls held a personal care item drive called “Jabon para Esperanza” (Soap for Hope). They boarded the train in Lapeer with 3 huge bags full of personal care items to donate to La Casa Norte, a Hispanic homeless organization in Chicago. Upon arriving in Chicago, they dedicated the weekend to serving at La Casa Norte by sorting clothing donations all day Saturday and making breakfast for the live-in housing for homeless boys on Sunday. The school community should be proud of Katie and Angelina for extending a helping hand to those in need. Many thanks as well to those who donated items for the Soap for Hope drive.

Jr./Sr. High School Reminder to Parents and Students
All Jr./Sr. High students are required to pay class dues each year. Please check with your child to see if they still owe their dues. Dues need to be paid to their class treasurer before Memorial Day.
Jr./Sr. High School Valedictorian and Salutatorian
There will be two Valedictorians at Peck High School this year. Katie Weller and Liz Berry will share the top honors having received the best GPA’s in the senior class. Eric Johnston has the honor of being this year’s Salutatorian for the class of 2013. Congratulations to all three students for their hard work and accomplishments over the past four years.

Congratulations to the Peck Elementary 2013 - 5th grade Battle of the Books team for winning first place on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at the Battle of the Books competition. Team members from left to right are: Maddy Crowe, Kaitlyn Fletcher, Adriana Stull, Emma Engler and Taylor Sempf.
Mrs. Hamblin’s 4th grade class and Mrs. Ross’s 1st grade class are helping each other to become better readers. Each week the two classes meet in the library to read with their new buddies. The fourth grade students help the first grade students choose their books, read to them, and remind them of appropriate library behavior. The first grade students also read to their fourth grade buddies. This is a fun way for all of them to practice their reading fluency and comprehension skills.
Elementary THANK YOU!!!
The sixth grade would like to thank everyone who supported us through our recent fundraisers. As a result of this generosity, we were able to raise enough to pay for our Hartley trip! Thank you for your continued support in our students’ educational experiences.
Kindergarten round up for the 2013-2014 school year will be Thursday and Friday, April 18 and 19, 2013. Please call the elementary office, 810-378-5200, to schedule your appointment as soon as possible if you have a child that will be 5 by November 1, 2013. If you know someone who has a child ready to start kindergarten please pass this information along. If your child will be 5 between November 1 and December 1, 2013 you can fill out a waiver and still have your child start school for the 2013.-2014 school year. We are looking forward to the many new faces that we will have at Peck Elementary School next year.

Jr./Sr. High School PECK PIRATE BANDS ROCK!!!!!
This is the season for Music! There are many opportunities for our band students to perform outside of our everyday band program. High School students are able to participate in various honors bands include Tri-County, Sanilac County and MSBOA District III. Junior High students are able to play in the MSBOA District III Honors Band. We have many of our band students to be very proud of. Sanilac County Honors Band is an auditioned group in which we had three selected; Liz Berry, Larissa Gerstenberger, and Jessica Grifka. Liz earned first chair in this ensemble! Tri County Honors Band is an auditioned group made up of students from Huron, Sanilac, and Tuscola Counties. Liz Berry was also selected to be a member of this group! MSBOA District III Honors Band acceptance is based on Solo and Ensemble participation and director nomination. Peck’s representation in this year’s ensemble included Lindsey Sharrard, Larissa Gerstenberger and Liz Berry in the High School Ensemble and Jennah Cubitt, Tanner McCanham-Visner, Amanda McDermott, Gary DesJardins, and Dylan Dankenbring for the Junior High group. In addition to the Ensembles we also had many students perform at Solo and Ensemble Festival. The following Junior High students performed in December: Amanda McDermott, Caleb Tesluck, Kyra Warner, Dylan Dankenbring, Gary DesJardins, Lucas Davis, Jennah Cubitt, and Tanner McCanham-Visner. High School Festival was held February 9th and the following students performed: Lindsey Sharrard, Liz Berry, Alyssa Vargo, and Shailynn Milligan. Lindsey, Liz and Shailynn all qualified for State Festival in the spring!! All of these fine musicians have represented our school in a very positive way and we would like to congratulate them all!
Elementary MEDICATION
If your child needs to take any type of medication at school, the elementary office can dispense the medication. We first need a medication form filled out and signed by the doctor. We can fax the form to the doctor once you have filled it out and signed it. An adult needs to bring the medication to school, students are not to possess any type of medication, other than inhalers including over the counter medication and cough drops.
Elementary HANDBOOK REMINDER
As it states in our student handbook: All children are expected to go outside daily unless weather conditions are prohibitive, with the following exception: • If a child brings a note signed by a physician requesting recess exclusion for a specific time period. (eg. September 3-September 6). It is recommended that the students be sent to school with winter boots, a hat, gloves, snow pants and a scarf, all of which can be stored in their lockers. If students are well enough to come to school they are well enough to go outside for recess unless a doctor states otherwise.
Jr./Sr. High School FOSTER GRANDPARENT PROGRAM
Peck Elementary School has partnered with the foster grandparent program. This is a wonderful program that provides volunteer grandparents to come into the school to work with students on a regular basis. They are provided with background checks and regular training to help ensure that they provide the best possible help for our students. We are happy to welcome Grandma Norma who is working 4 days a week with our second graders and Grandma Curry who is working 4 days a week in Mrs. Fuller’s first grade classroom. They will soon be joined by Grandma Maxfield who will be working in kindergarten. We are looking forward to having other foster grandparents join us in the future.
Jr./Sr. High School WHAT IS SALE-AWAY DESIGNS?
Sale-Away Designs is an apparel design business run during Mr. Engler’s computer classes. This club is open to all 9th through 12th grade students at the beginning of the school year. Students who wish to be involved and are in a computer class learn computer skills while running this business. The club also will compete in the “I’ve Got a Better Idea Contest” through Thumb Works late in February. Last year Sale-Away Designs won this contest, so this year’s expectations are high. Sale-Away Designs is working to provide a quality product for a fair price. Price points are decided to make a small profit, not to be a fund raiser for the club. We have supported other community causes also, like many local businesses do. The business has given many donations, with the t-shirt for Wyatt being one of the most rewarding. The Week of January 21st, Sale-Away Designs will be receiving a shipment of new products and will be looking for your business. Sale-Away Designs also would like to do business with any person or company that is looking to purchase personalized apparel. Please contact Mr. Engler at 378-5200 Ext. 3221 or contact the business at SaleAwayDesign@peckschools.net.
Saturday evening, January 12th, people from Peck and the surrounding communities gathered at Lakeview Hills for an awesome evening of bowling in support of Wyatt Fleming, a young boy fighting a battle with cancer. The students heard about the event and wanted to make a donation. Sale-Away Designs’ donation was a yellow t-shirt, with the words “Mowing Down Pins for Wyatt” in a tractor logo. The Speaker Township Fire Department paid $500 for the shirt during the benefit. Sale-Away Designs would like to thank: Nickie Sheldon for creating the logo (with a little help from Mr. Sell), Lois and Company for the quick printing of the shirt, Deanna Molesworth for the wonderful idea to have Wyatt autograph the t-shirt, Ryan O’Connor for getting the crowd excited as he auctioneered, and Wyatt for telling the people to “raise your hands”. So many neat things happened during this event, and it was definitely a time to be proud of our community. Sale-Away Designs was lucky enough to be a part of it. If you would like information on this young boy, please follow All for Wyatt on Facebook.
