Kindergarten Round Up Minimize
PECK COMMUNITY SCHOOLS KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
 
FOR THE FALL OF 2014
 
Parents are asked to enroll their children at the Peck Elementary School office during the month of April. As pursuant to Michigan law, children who will be five (5) on or before October 1, 2014, are eligible for kindergarten if a child was born between October 2, 2014,  through December 1, 2014, a waiver to this law is available.  
 
Please come to the elementary office any school day between the hours of 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. to enroll your child.  You do not need to call for an appointment or bring your child. 
 
Parents should bring:
 
1.     Your child’s birth certificate
 
2.     Your child’s immunization record
 
3.     Your child’s social security card
 
4.     Proof of residency: voter’s registration card, utility bill, renter’s agreement, or tax assessment are all acceptable.
 
Kindergarten testing, a tour of the school and classroom, and the opportunity to meet the kindergarten teacher Mrs. Galligan will all be available on Wednesday, April 23rd between 5:00 – 7:30. An appointment is not necessary for this evening.   
 
If you are unable to enroll during this time period or have any questions please call the office at (810) 378-5200.
      
District News Minimize
The school board meeting origionally on April 17th has been changed to April 24th.   
District Make Up Days
Peck Community Schools Board of Education voted on Wednesday, March 19th to alter the schedule to meet the state requirements of 1,098 instructional hours and 176 school days to include the following changes. Please note them on your calendars. Transportation and breakfast will be available on all of the days listed below; lunch will be available on full days of school. ½ Day dismissal will be at 11:30. April 4th - Full day of school (previously was a ½ day) April 18th – Friday before Easter – ½ day (previously was no school) April 21st - Monday after Easter – full day (previously was no school) April 26th - Saturday – full day of school May 10th - Saturday – full day of school May 17th - Saturday – ½ day of school May 31st - Saturday – full day of school June 7th - Saturday – ½ day of school June 11th - Wednesday – full day of school (previously was a ½ day) June 12th - Thursday – full day of school (this day has been added onto the end of the school year) June 13th - Friday – last day – ½ day (this day has been added onto the end of the school year) Please keep in mind that we need to have 75% of the entire student body in attendance in order to count it as a day of school. If we do not meet that percentage on a Saturday, the administration has been given the authority by the Board of Education to re-evaluate the schedule and cancel any further Saturdays and add days on to the end of the school year.   
Jr./Sr. High School One Spectacular Year
What a year our athletes have given us. First a football state championship then a quarterfinal appearance by our boys’ basketball team. Not only did they win 33 straight games, but the manner in which both teams carried themselves. I can’t tell you how many compliments I’ve received from people I don’t even know about our Peck Pirate athletes, coaches and spectators. Guys and Coaches thanks for the great ride this year and good luck to you as you prepare for spring sports. FANS you are awesome! The great turnouts at these events and the spirit that filled the gym still gives me goose bumps. Continue to be the great Pirate Fans as we move on to the final season this year. THANKS TO ALL!!!!!   
Jr./Sr. High School Valedictorian and Salutatorian
There will two Valedictorians at Peck High School this year. Hailey Sharrard and Wesley Bissett will share the top honors having received the best GPA’s in the senior class. Chelsea Lofton, Samantha Murray, Megan Pitts and Nicholas Reese have the honor of being this year’s Salutatorians for the class of 2014. Congratulations to all these students for their hard work and accomplishments over the past four years!   
Jr./Sr. High School Junior High Academic Track
Last Saturday, many of the seventh and eighth grade students participated in the Academic and Talent Competition that was held at CPS. They competed in a wide range of categories such as algebra, science, world history, geography, grammar, current events, creating power point presentations, colored as well as black and white drawings, dramatic reading, group improvisation, vocal solos, dancing, and instrumental groups. Their hard work, dedication, and competitive spirit were evident as they competed against five other schools in the county. As a team, they accumulated enough points to place second. Congratulations on a job well done!!!!!   
Jr./Sr. High School Scholarships
There will be several scholarships available for seniors on the Peck Schools website (peckschools.org) after March 31st. Go to the Jr./Sr. High tab then click on scholarships. All of these scholarships are due to Miss Davidson by April 25th.   
Jr./Sr. High School Junior/Senior Prom
Midnight Masquerade - Saturday, May 3rd at Good Thymes Barn, 780 Galbraith Line Rd., Melvin. $25/Single, $45/Couple. Tickets are on sale now during lunch.   
Jr./Sr. High School NHS Process
Invitations were sent to those students in grades 10 thru 12 who are eligible to apply for this year’s National Honor Society. In order to receive an invitation you must have a 3.0 grade point average at the conclusion of the 1st semester. The deadline for applications to be turned in is by 3 p.m. April 17th. The next step for those turning in applications is an interview the week of April 22nd. Then the faculty committee will make the final decision and students will be notified via mail. The faculty committee decision is final. There is no appeal process. The induction ceremony will be May 4th.   
Jr./Sr. High School End of 3rd Quarter
Friday, March 28th marks the end of the 3rd quarter for students. Report cards will be sent home on Friday, April 4th with those students who are not able to attend conferences.   
Jr./Sr. High School Reminder To Parents and Students
All Jr./Sr. High students are required to pay class dues each year. Please check with your child to see if they still owe their dues. Dues need to be paid to their class treasurer before Memorial Day.   
Kindergarten round up for the 2014-2015 school year will be Wednesday, April 23rd, 2014 from 5:00-7:30 p.m. Please call the elementary office, 810-378-5200, to schedule your appointment if you have a child that will be 5 by October 1, 2014. If you know someone who has a child ready to start kindergarten please pass this information along. If your child will be 5 between October 1 and December 1, 2014 you can fill out a waiver and still have your child start school for the 2014-2015 school year. We are looking forward to the many new faces that we will have at Peck Elementary School next year.   
Elementary Head Start
Head Start is now taking applications for the 2014-2015 school year. Head Start is a free preschool for children ages 3-4. Please contact Traci Kroetsch toll free at 877-243-2211 for more information.   
On March 19th, Sanilac County Farm Bureau representatives Pam Thom and Jody Sharrard visited Mrs. Hamblin’s 3rd grade classroom for an afternoon of fun. The third graders were provided with a variety of fun facts about agriculture, which they then used to create a fun fact spinner. They were also treated to a story telling of Who Grew My Soup, written by Tom Darbyshire. Our classroom winner for the annual Agriculture Week Coloring Contest, Taylor Molesworth, was announced and presented with a Pizza Hut gift card. The rest of the students received a certificate for a free Personal Pan Pizza from Pizza Hut for their participation. Finally, all were able to enjoy the delicious vegetable soup which they helped to prepare. What more can be said, but… mmm…mmm good!   
The P.P.T.O. is running a Weekend Food Program to assist families that are in need of help. We will assist any family that needs help regardless of income. There are request forms that will be sent home with each student. We will continue to run this program as long as we have the funds to do so. All forms returned to the school will be kept confidential and backpacks will be put in the students locker while they are in class.   
Elementary Lunch Accounts
LUNCH ACCOUNTS Please remember that it is your responsibility to keep funds in your child’s foodservice account for their meals. Deposit requests are sent home each Thursday with the students who have negative balances. You are also able to check your student’s Zangle account for their Food Service activity and balances under the “cafeteria” tab. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Cheri Wedge at (810) 378-5171 ext. 3020.   
Jr./Sr. High School Sale-Away Designs
Congratulations to Sale-Away Designs on their second place finish in the “I’ve Got a Better Idea Contest” through Thumb Works on February 17th. Sale-Away Designs is an apparel design business run during Mr. Engler’s computer classes. Sale-Away Designs also would like to do business with any person or company that is looking to purchase personalized apparel. Jr./Sr. High School Peck Band Boosters
The Band Boosters are a small group of individuals that are here to support our Pirate Bands. Meetings are open to anyone interested in helping out. Every little bit helps a lot. We would like to invite you to our next meeting to see what we are all about. All meetings take place at 7:00 in the Band room on the First Tuesday of each month. Remember, if you have a child in band YOU ARE A BAND BOOSTER and your support is greatly appreciated!   
Elementary V.I.P. Lunches
Each month this year, a different grade level will have a V.I.P. lunch day where the students can have someone special come and eat lunch at school with them. The tentative schedule is as follows: 2nd Grade = Friday, March 18th; 1st Grade = Friday, April 25th; Kindergarten = Friday, May 30th. Students will bring home sign up slips a week or two prior to the V.I.P. lunch dates to let us know how many will attend. All V.I.P. lunches will start at 10:45 a.m. We look forward to having these special visitors in our school.   
District Breakfast
Come join us! Breakfast is served every morning from 7:45 - 8:10 am in the cafeteria. Cost is $1.25 for full pay students, $0.30 for reduced and $0.00 for Free Students. We welcome anyone to stop by for a nice nutritious way to start the day.   
The food service department is looking for substitute workers in our kitchen. Please stop in and pick up an application if you are interested. Hours would be 9:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

Elementary Grant Awarded
Peck Elementary School is the proud recipient of the White-Reinhardt Mini-Grant from the American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture in cooperation with the American Farm Bureau Women’s Leadership Committee. This mini-grant was offered to state and county Farm Bureaus in amounts up to $500 for classroom education programs, which will support projects that will expand agricultural literacy. In cooperation with the Sanilac Farm Bureau, the project plan is to place a small greenhouse, which will allow students to learn about seeds and growing plants. As a result of seeing the process of germination, students will gain a better respect of what goes into producing food for them to eat. In addition, this would help foster our relationship between the school and area farmers. Thank you Farm Bureau!   
Are you willing to serve your community as a substitute teacher? Peck Community Schools is currently in partnership with a company called PCMI. This company is responsible for the retention and deployment of all substitute teachers. If you are capable and willing to serve in this capacity, please go to www.pcmiservices.com You will be able to follow the online enrollment instructions to become certified as a substitute teacher. Thank you for your interest in the students of Peck Community Schools.   
Parents are reminded that if someone other than you might be picking up your child during or after school, that person needs to be on a registration form at the school. If they are not on your child’s registration form the school will not let your child go with that person. Also if your phone number or address changes please contact the school as soon as possible to let us know. We have had several problems trying to contact parents due to a change in phone numbers.
